Of the more than 13,000 objects in the NGC and IC catalogs, only about 129 are planetary nebulae. Probably, part of the reason for this relatively small number is that many planetaries are either very small and star-like, or very faint, making them difficult to detect with the equipment available when these catalogs were produced. Even so, these 129 objects present a wide range of targets for the observer. Some are large and bright, while others are very small. There is something here for all observers no matter what their skills and instruments.
Imaging all of these objects is still a work in progress, with many more objects still to be done. Hopefully in the near future more time will be available to complete the full list.
