Here a geminid passes through the southern Milky Way, past the beautiful double star, gamma velorum. The very bright star at the bottom right is Canopus, while below the meteor is the False Cross, so named because of its resemblance to the Southern Cross, which is just out of view to the left. The long axis of the False Cross points the the beautiful open cluster NGC 2516. The open cluster to the left of the Flase Cross is NGC 3114. December 13, 1998.
