NGC 2237 - NGC 2238
The Rosette Nebula

45 minutes exposure. Fuji Super HG II 400 film.
300mm f/2.8 Canon lens.

The Rosette Nebula is one the the more famous emission nebulae. Photographs of this object have graced numerous astronomical publications. Visually however it can be a challenging object under less than dark skies. However under dark skies it can be observed without too much difficulty with an 8" telescope.

Through the telescope it appears as a faint haze, brighter at the outer edges, surrounding a bright cluster of stars. This is NGC 2244. To the south of NGC 2237 is another emission nebula, Sh2-280. Att he top left of the image is a wedge-shaped group of stars. The is NGC 2264, also known as The Christmas Tree Cluster. Surrounding this cluster is Sh2-273, otherwise known as the Cone Nebula, while just below it is Hubble's Variable Nebula, NGC 2261.
