Comet 19P/Borrelly

Periodic comet 19P/ Borrelly is a member of Jupiter's "family" of comets, with an orbital period of about 6.8 years. Perihelion distance is 1.35AU, and the aphelion distance is about 5.8AU.

In 2001, the Deep Space 1 spacecraft made a close flyby of the comet, giving astronomers their first close look at a comet since Giotto flew past comet Halley in 1986. In the end, the flyby was an outstanding success with dozens of detailed images of the nucleus being returned along with considerable non-imaging data on the comet and its surroundings.
