Linux

Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License, the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. Click here to find out more about the operating system that is causing a revolution in the world of computers.  The following is a brief list of Linux distributions.
 

Keep in mind that this is only a small fraction of the available Linux distros.  For a more complete listing, look here.  If you're looking for a recommendation, we use Mandrake Linux almost exclusively within our department.  If you're on the Tech campus, you can download it here.
 

*BSD

BSD (short for Berkeley Systems Division) is one of the original derivatives of AT&T's UNIX.  As such, it has a long and glorious lineage and is well known for it's speed and rock-solid reliablity.  Some of the free variants available are listed below.

Desktop environments and window managers

In UNIX Xwindows environments, window managers / desktop environments are often the way we interact with the OS.  They can vary from exceedingly simple to overtly ornate, and the merits of each are as much a matter of individual preference as anything else.  Here's a brief listing of some of the free window managers and desktop environments available.

Productivity and connectivity

A few browsers, office suites, email clients, and other items various and sundry, all free.
