Gamera Mark II Cluster

Gamera Mark II-A replaced our original Beowulf cluster in the early summer of 2001. This cluster represents the first 16 nodes of a planned 32-node cluster to be operational by the summer of 2002. Each node of the Gamera Mark II-A cluster is a 1.0 GHz Athlon with 256 MB of ram and a 20-gigabyte disk. To date, our tests show that the new cluster is about 2.5 times as fast as the original. The aggregate disk storage has improved from 64 gigabytes to 320 gigabytes. The first half (16 nodes) of this upgrade cost approximately $10,000.

The additional 16 nodes were added in the summer of 2002 for an additional cost of approximatley $15,000 including 3 additional 24-port ethernet switches, 48 additional 100 base-T ethernet cards, 4 additional UPS backups, and new racks for the 32 nodes.
