The southern highlands contain some of the most rugged terain on the near side of the Moon. To the east of the crater Tycho lie numerous large craters, many of them quite degraded from the results of the Tycho impact. One that is only slightly degraded, is Werner, named after the 15th century, German astronomer and mathematician, Johannes Werner.

Werner is the centre of three large craters. The bright spot on its northern (bottom) rim is an un-named crater. To the south is Aliacensis, while to the north is the heavily degraded Blanchinus. The large crater near the bottom of the image with the prominent central peak is Arzachel.
