Leo II

Combination of 10, 3 minute images.
SBIG STL-1001E CCD. 20" f/6.8 Dall-Kirkham cassegrain telescope at prime focus.

Leo 1 is a very faint member of the Local Group of galaxies. It is a dwarf elliptical galaxy that has a total magnitude of around 11, but the galaxy is nearly 10 arc minutes across, so the surface brightness is very low. Also, the very bright star Regulus is located less than half a degree to the south, making it very difficult to observe the galaxy visually unless the skies are very dark and clear.
