The south polar regions of the Moon contain some of the most rugged and mountaineous terrain anywhere on the lunar surface. Particularly impressive are the Libnitz mountains, which reach over 10,000m high. Higher than any mountain on Earth. In the image above, the lunar south pole is at the right-hand edge of the image.
