Sinus Iridum

When the moon is about 10 days old, a large bay in the north of Mare Imbrium becomes visible. This is Sinus Iridum, the Bay of Rainbows. Shortly after sunrise, this region is a facinating area to view. The shadow from Laplace Promintary (left point of bay) are very long and if the light is just right, may be split in two as the sun shines through a valley near the end of the promintary. To the left of Sinus Iridum is the Straight Range and further to the left is the crater Plato. The two small craters above Sinus Iridium are Leverrier (left) and Helicon.

The large crater on the rim of the bay is Bianchini.

The above image was taken through fairly thick clouds that had stopped the asteroid photometry project I had been trying to work on. The Moon could only just be seen visually through the clouds, so I decided to have a go at imaging it just to see what coould be obtained. I was quite surprised at how good it turned out!
