M33 NGC 598
The Pinwheel Galaxy

Object Type Galaxy Sc
Constellation Triangulum
Magnitude 5.5
Size 30.0' x 42.0'

M33 is a very large and bright galaxy in Triangulum. It is easily visible in binoculars and can be seen with the naked eye if the skies are very dark. One of the larger members of the local group, M33 is a multi-armed spiral, tilted nearly to face-on. Situated at a distance of about 2.4 million light years, it is often considered to be the most distant object visible to the naked eye. Generally this is the case, however observers with very good eyesight and under very dark skies, have reported sighting M81(northern hemisphere) and NGC 5128 (southern hemisphere) with the naked eye.

M33 can be a difficult object for small telescopes, as the surface brightness is very low. However if low magnification is used, little difficulty should be encountered in observing it. With larger telescopes, several of the star clusters and nebulae can be seen, with many of them having seperate NGC numbers.
