Messier object number 25 is a bright open cluster in Sagittarius that was not included in John Herschel's General Catalog and therefore did not receive an NGC designation. It is easily visible to the naked eye from a dark location and is a fine object in the telescope, especially from the southern hemisphere where is reaches a high altitude.
