Jupiter 2010 Images

Since moving to Texas at the beginning of 2010, I have had the use of a very nice 20" telescope. Although my spare time from research with this instrument has been limited, it has been fun to image the planets where possible.

One of the more interesting events on Jupiter during 2012 was the disappearence of the South Equatorial Belt. As can be seen in the images below, the region where the SEB is usually located, was just a white region. This gave Jupiter an appearence more like that as seen during the Pioneer 10 flyby in 1972. It also made the Great Red Spot much easier to observe.

Each of these images were captured in quick succession. The rapid rotation of Jupiter is evident by looking at the shift in position of the while spot in the North Equatorail Belt.
