Much of the western portion of Scorpius is imbedded in dust, which becomes visible when there is a star close enough to illuminate it. This is particularly evident in the region around rho ophiuchi. However it is also evident around many other stars in the region.

The photograph above is centred on the star nu scorpii. (SAO 159764) The surrounding nebulosity is IC 4592.
