NGC 2024, number 67 in the Herschel 400 list is the well-known Flame Nebula in Orion. Easily visible in a small telescope, the nebula is situated just to the east of the bright star Alnitak, the eastern star in the belt of Orion. Although the close presence of such a bright star makes it easy to locate the nebula, it can prove to be a problem when trying to observe or image the nebula! In the image above, the bright streak running across the image is not a satellite or meteor, rather it is a diffraction spike from Alnitak which is just out of the field of view to the left.
