NGC 4214 is a very distorted irregular galaxy, possibly as a result of a close encounter with another galaxy. From the way that many of the stars seem to be pulled towards the lower left (south west), the large, faint galaxy in that direction is the one encountered. This is the 17.7 magnitude, PGC 39145, also known as DDO 113. The only classification I have seen for this galaxy is irregular. However in the image, it looks more like an E6. There is another very faint galaxy just off to the left of NGC 4214.
