Copernicus

1/250 second exposure, Kodak Ektrachrome 400 slide film.
300mm f/6 newtonian telescope at prime focus.

The large crater Copernicus comes into view when the moon is about 9 days old. It is situated in the north eastern quadrent of Oceanus Procellarum, just near the Carpathian mountain range and to the south of Mare Imbrium. Copernicus is about 90 kilometres across and the centre of a bright system of rays. The walls display several magnificent terraces. One of the most memorable photographs of the Apollo era was taken by Lunar Orbiter 2 in 1967, when it photographed Copernicus from an oblique angle.

1/60 second exposure, Kodak Tri-x 400 film.
5" f/5 refractor plus 6mm orthoscopic eyepiece.

This photograph was taken in 1971, and was one of the first photographs I made using the 5" refractor. The two craters above Copernicus are Reinhold and Lansberg, while at the right-hand edge, Kepler, with its system of bright rays is visible.

Looking west of Copernicus towards Kepler and south towards the Fra Mauro highlands.

This image looks east of Copernicus towards the crater Manilus and Mare Vaporum. The pair of large craters above (south) of Manilus are Godin (top) and Agrippa (below).
