Clavius

1/250 second exposure, Kodak Etkachrome 400 slide film.
300mm f/6 newtonain at prime focus.

Clavius is a very large crater in the southern highlands of the moon. It becomes visible when the moon is about 8 days old. At this time the crater is very distinctive and the numerous craters on its floor stand out well. Nearer to full moon however, Clavius can be very difficult to identify due to the bright rays from the crater Tycho which is just to the north.

1/15 seconds exposure, Kodak Etkachrome 400 film.
10" f/5.6 newtonian plus 9mm eyepiece.

A less common view of Clavius. The Sun sets over the crater as the Moon passes third quarter.

Combination of 20, 0.02 second exposures with an H-alpha filter. SBIG ST-8XE CCD.
20" f/6.8 cassegrain with a 2x barlow lens.

On this night the seeing was very good, allowing a very sharp view of the surface. The following night the seeing was much worse as seen in the image below. Still it is interesting to see the change in appearence as the sun sets on the region.
