Barnard 33
The Horsehead Nebula

31 minutes exposure. Fuji Provia 1600 film.
5" f/5 refractor at prime focus.

One of the most famous objects in the sky is the dark nebula Barnard 33, more commonly known as the Horsehead Nebula. This is a tough object for visual observers due to the faintness of IC 434, however there have been reports of it being visible in a 4" telescope! One of the biggest problems it the bright glare from the bright star zeta orionis. (Alnitak)

The bright nebula to the east (left) of B33 is NGC 2023. This is a fairly easy object for a 6" telescope. To the lower right is a small greenish object. This is comet Borrelly, which passed between the Horsehead nebula and M 42 during mid-September, 1994. At the time is was around 10th magnitude.
