Abell 72
PK 59.7 -18.7

Abell 72 is a rather large, and very low surface brightness planetary nebula in Delphinus. The magnitude is quoted as 13.8, but the light is spread out over an area about 2 arc minutes across. Making observation even more difficult is the presence of an 8th magniude star on the edge of the nebula.

The small patch just below Abell 72 is the 16th magnitude galaxy, PGC 65491. This is an interesting challenge for a 20" telescope. To the right is the 16.5 magnitude galaxy, PGC 1434890. The glow at the bottom of the image is caused by a 7th magnitude star just out of the field. Just above this glow is the 16.0 magnitude galaxy PGC 65502.
