Abell 39 is a large planetary nebula in Hercules, about 10 degrees south and about 3 degrees west of the globular cluster, M 13. Like all Abell planetaries, it has a very low surface brightness, although not as bad as many. The magnitude is quoted as 13.7, but it is a relatively small 2.9 arc minutes in diameter, making the nebula slightly brighter than most Abell planetaries.
