Abell 34
PK 248 +29.1

5 minutes exposure, Meade 416XT.
8" f/6 newtonian at prime focus.

Abell 34 is a large planetary nebula in Hydra that has a very low surface brightness. The magnitude is quoted as 14.5, but the light is spread out over and area 4.7 arc minutes in diameter. The only trace of the nebula that was visible in a 17.5" telescope was the very small patch indicated by the lines in the image above. A few very vague traces curving to the left of the patch are visible in the image.
