Asteroid 383 Janina


Asteroid 383 Janina is a main belt asteroid that was discovered by Auguste Charlois on January 29, 1894 in Nice. It is a member of the Themistian asteroid family and is found in the outer portion of the asteroid belt. The semi-major axis is 3.14 AU and the eccentricity is 0.167 with a fairly low inclination of 2.65 degrees.

The Themis family is one of the largest and longest-recognized families of asteroids and comprises approximately 535 known asteroids. Asteroids in this family are C-type asteroids with a composition believed to be similar to that of carbonaceous chondrites.

I observed this asteroid on 5 nights during October - December 2003. The period derived was 4.636 hours with an amplitude of 0.13 magnitude.
