Asteroid 1549 Mikko

1549 Mikko is a main belt asteroid with an estimated diameter of about 15 km. It was discovered on April 2, 1937 by Y. Vaisala at Turku. The semi-major axis is 2.19 AU, the eccentricity is 0.083 and the inclination is 5.55 degrees.

I observed this asteroid on four nights in December 2002 and January 2003. The resulting data was very noisy and difficult to interpret. The single-minimum period of about 3.456 hours was obtained, but attempts at a double peak lightcurve were not very successful as can be seen in the second graph below. Clearly this asteroid requires much more work.

Lightcurve results for 1549 Mikko. Derived period 3.456 ± 0.001 hours. Amplitude of 0.35 ± 0.05 magnitude.

Best attempt at a double peak lightcurve for 1549 Mikko. Derived period 7.960 ± 0.001 hours. Amplitude of 0.35 ± 0.05 magnitude.
