Comet 1999 J2 SKIFF

Another 15th magnitude comet that was nice with the CCD, was 1999 J2 Skiff. During June it drifted through the galaxy cluster AGC 2028 which made for some interesting images.

Comet 1999 J2 Skiff. June 17, 2001.
Combination of 2 pairs of 3 minute images, Meade 416XTE . 300mm F/6 newtonian at prime focus.

At this time the comet was just starting to pass through the galaxy cluster AGC 2028, so several faint galaxies are visible in the image. Below the same images have been aligned on the stars rather than the comat as in the above image. This shows the galaxies better.

Comet 1999 J2 Skiff. June 19, 2001.
Combination of 2, 3 minute images taken with a Meade 416XTE and a 300mm F/6 newtonian at prime focus.

On this night, the comet was almost in the centre of the cluster. As a result there are quite a number of galaxies visible in the image. As with the previous image, below is the same image aligned on the stars rather than the comet. The brightest galaxy is the 15th magnitude PGC 54128.

Comet 1999 J2 Skiff. June 21, 2001.
Combination of 2, 3 minute images, Meade 416XTE. 300mm F/6 newtonian at prime focus.

By now the comet had cleared the galaxy cluster.
