NGC 6822

60 minutes exposure taken, Fuji Super HG II 400 film.
5" f/5 refractor, prime focus.

NGC 6822 is a bright irregular galaxy in Sagittarius, sometimes called the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy. It is fairly bright, however its large size means that the surface brightness is quite low. Also, the background sky is littered with numerous stars from the rich Milky Way. As a result, the galaxy can seem lost. Low magnification definitely provides the best views. In an 8" telescope it appears as a large, fairly faint, irregular patch of light, almost buried amongst the rich starfield.
