NGC 6221 is a small but bright, face-on spiral galaxy located less than half a degree east of the bright star eta Arae. It is visible in an 8" telescope and is seen through a rich region of the Milky Way. The galaxy appears as a small eliptical haze with a bright nucleus. No trace of the spiral arms could be seen with a 12" telescope.
