NGC 5363

Combination of 3, 3 minute exposures, SBIG ST4 CCD.

NGC 5363 is a large and bright elliptical galaxy in Virgo, and it is an outlying member of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Easily visible in an 8" telescope as a bright featureless haze, NGC 5363 makes a fine pair with NGC 5364. In the image above, the patches on the side are caused by frosting on the CCD chip. This was one of the first CCD images I took.

The beautiful spiral galaxy located below NGC 5363 is NGC 5364. Just to the right (west) of NGC 5364 is the 13.7 magnitude NGC 5360. The two bright edge-on spirals to the right of NGC 5363 are the 13.0 magnitude NGC 5356 and the 13.4 magnitude NGC 5348. Numerous fainter PGC galaxies dot the field. The bright streak across the field was a satellite.
