NGC 5170 is a moderately bright, edge-on spiral galaxy in Virgo. It is easily visible in an 8" telescope as a thin line, brighter and slightly thicker in the middle. It is situated about 2 degrees west of the bright galaxy NGC 5247, and is most easily located by moving 1.5 degrees east of the 5th magnitude star, 63 virginis.
