NGC 5101 is a moderately bright barred spiral galaxy in Hydra, about 5 degrees north-west of M83. In an 8" telescope it appears as a small haze, slightly brighter in the middle.

To the right of NGC 5101 is another moderately bright spiral galaxy, NGC 5078, with the 14th magnitude IC 879 right beside it. To the upper right is the bright elliptical galaxy 5061. There are numerous other faint galaxies visible in the image.
