NGC 5078

58 minutes exposure, Fuji Provia 400 slide film.
5" f/5 refractor, prime focus.

NGC 5078 is one of the brighter members of a small group of galaxies in Hydra, about 4 degrees north-west of M 83. The brightest galaxy in the group is NGC 5101. This is the galaxy in the centre of the image. NGC 5078 is a short distance to the left (west). The tiny dot just alongside NGC 5078, is IC 879, while to the upper left, beside a bright star, is NGC 5061. NGC 5078 is actually a beautiful edge-on spiral with a promient dark dust lane that shows up well in CCD images with 12" or larger telescopes.
