300mm f/6 newtonian telescope prime focus.

NGC 4517 is an edge-on spiral galaxy in Virgo, that is a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster. This cluster covers a large portion of the sky centred on the Coma/Virgo border, and lies at a distance of about 60 million light years.

In an 8" telescope the galaxy appears as a bright, thin line with a slightly brighter centre. The dark lanes visible in this image are not visible in a 12" telescope.
