NGC 1999 is a curious mix of light and dark nebulosity surrounding a 10th magnitude star in Orion, about 2 degrees south of M42. As is typical with much of the constellation of Orion, the field is bathed in faint nebulosity that becomes visible in the telescope when located near a bright enough star.
