Comet 168p Hergenrother is normally a faint member of Jupiter's family of comets, with an orbital period of just under 7 years. However during the 2012 return, the comet flared in brightness by more than 500 times, reached magnitude 8 and becoming visible in small telescopes. Subsiquent observations revealed that the nucleus had split into at least 4 fragments.
