NGC 1300

NGC 1300 is a moderately bright, face-on, barred spiral galaxy in Eridanus. In an 8" telescope, it appears as an circular patch of light. Even in a 12" telescope the spiral arms were not visible under dark skies.

There are a number of other fainter galaxies in the region. Among the brighter ones in the photograph above are the 13th magnitude NGC 1267, which is a short distance to the upper right of NGC 1300, and the 14th magnitude NGC 1301, which is visible a little above and slightly to the left of the left-hand bright star.
