NGC 1055 is a moderately bright edge-on, spiral galaxy, located about half a degree east of beta ceti. NGC 1055 is not unlike a minature M104, with a distinct dust lane across the centre of the galaxy. The galaxy is visible as an elongated nebulous patch in an 8" telescope. The dust lane was not noticed in a 12" telescope.
