We have recently been successful in using the J. Fred Bucy Lecturer Fund to attract distinguished scientists to visit and have been able to host several distinguished scientists per year as J. Fred Bucy Lecturers. This fund was established by alumnus J. Fred Bucy and his wife. We thank them for this gift, which allows us to bring distinguished scientists here who otherwise would not consider coming. It enhances our graduate and research programs and helps to compensate for Lubbock's geographic isolation. Since the last newsletter, we have hosted six Bucy Lecturers. These were Dr. Joseph F. Dolan from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (Feb., 1998), Dr. Chris Quigg from Fermi National Accelerator Lab (Feb., 1998), Dr. Henry Kendall, from M.I.T. (March, 1998), Dr. George Watkins of Lehigh U. (Sept., 1998), Dr. Hans Frauenfelder from Los Alamos National Lab (April, 1999), and Dr. Tom Kennedy from the Naval Research Lab (May, 1999). All of these people are prominent in their field. They include one Nobel Laureate (Kendall) and four members of the National Academy of Sciences (Dolan, Watkins, Frauenfelder, and Kennedy). Their expertise covers a wide range of topics, including astrophysics, particle physics, semiconductor physics, and biophysics. Each of them gave from one to three lectures and had many individual and group visits with faculty and students. Their talks were all well received and many said that they profited from their individual interactions with them as well.
