From: Spencer Buckner (BS, 1980; MS, 1988; PhD, 1991), email: buckner@mhd1.moorhead.msus.edu Greetings from the Frozen North. Here are my current addresses: Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, Moorhead State U., Moorhead, MN 55653, (218) 291-4268, Fax (218)236-2290. Home: 1318 34 Ave. S, pt # 103, Moorhead, MN 56560, (218)291-9265. After spending a year and a half in Malaysia working for Indiana University, I returned to Fargo, ND. After a six months stay, I took a temporary position at Winona State U. in MN. After two years there, I returned to Fargo/Moorhead to teach at Moorhead State. I have been teaching physical science for Elementary Ed majors as well as general and experimental physics. I have also been teaching the introductory astronomy here and have started to get an interest in it. The department is undergoing a major turnover in the next couple of years due to retirements. I'm applying for an open tenure track position and think I have the inside track on it. I've been working with VJ Agarwal trying to get an Eisenhower grant for a summer workshop for elementary teachers. We have two proposals: one on Light and Color and one on Astronomy. I've tried to get the Thin Film lab working again. One of my problems is a lack of students to work in the lab. This year is better than last but there are still only 10 majors. I have become the SPS advisor. Reminds me of when I was TTU SPS president.
From: Bill Covington (MS, 1975; PhD, 1978), email: bc18@swt.edu I have been on leave of absence from Sam Houston State U. for two years. After 8 years as the Assoc. VP for Research and Graduate Studies, I was ready to do something different. At SEMATECH, I have been the manager for the Doping Development Program. I have been involved in looking for ways to improve standard ion implantation and for completely new methods for doping semiconductors. In addition, SEMATECH is looking for better ways to anneal doped materials. I've spent much of my time working with universities that I have under contract to SEMATECH. SEMATECH is looking for ways to write collaborative proposals with universities as well as forming collaboratives among universities. I have recently accepted the position of Assoc. VP for Research at Southwest Texas State U. and will start on Oct. 1, 1999. My contact information is 601 University Drive, San Marcos, Texas 78666-4616, 512 245-2314, 512 245-3847 fax, bc18@swt.edu, email.
From: Tayfun Demirturk (MS, 1997), email: z7f79@yahoo.com I am working at Pamukkale U. as a research assistant. In a couple of months I will be fully responsible for the undergraduate labs. The university still has problems like internet connections. It is really slow and sometimes it is making me crazy, especially when I compare it with TTU. Greetings and best wishes to everybody. Pamukkale U., Fizik Departmani, Kinikli/Denizli TURKEY, TEL: (90) 258 - 213 5799
From Pamela Duncan Flesher (MS, 1979), email: hkflesher@aptekindustries.com A copy of the newsletter announcing Dr. Hatfield's appointment as the head of the department came in the mail. What great news. I am working in Silicon Valley as product marketing manager for Bio-Rad, supporting a silicon defect metrology system (fancy scanning Nomarski microscope that nondestructively images defects in the bulk of silicon wafers-cool machine).
From Bill Ford (PhD, 1986), email: BFord@XonTech.com or Fordw@sstb.xontech.com I've moved to Huntsville, AL. I'm working at XonTech. Work: XonTech, Inc. 6724 Odyssey Drive, Huntsville, AL 35806, (256) 922-1680 x 4218. Home: 95 Indian Creek Rd, Apt #110, Huntsville, AL 35806, (256) 461-7816. The job is interesting. I'm working with the Sensor Simulation TestBed group. We're under contract to Boeing to develop a simulation of the National Missile Defense System. I'm modeling the ground based interceptor in the National Missile Defense program. It involves doing lots of classical mechanics. Tell Dr. Quade that I'm looking over my notes from his class and blowing the dust off of Goldstein! We're doing the programming in an object oriented language called Eiffel. It's a pain trying to learn yet another programming language. It's a very easy language to learn syntactically, but applying the concepts is difficult. I've written the Ground Based Interceptor and the Satellite Based Infrared Satellite simulation in Eiffel.

I graduated from TTU in 1962 with a BS in physics, and then went on to get a PhD from the U. of Tenn. in 1967, doing my thesis work at Oak Ridge in the area of medium energy nuclear reactions at the ORIC cyclotron. I am now almost retired, after almost 30 years of Defense Related Research in area of Nuclear Weapon effects, and Ballistic Missile Defense working for Science Applications Corp. I have a contract (12 hrs/week) supporting the UK Royal Navy, Director General of Strategic Weapons Systems wargaming model. Contact info: (520)749-2216, 11375 E. Limberlost Rd., Tucson AZ 85749
From: Young K. Park (PhD, 1994), email: ykpark@kistmail.kist.re.kr Because of the economic crisis in Korea since Nov. 1997, all of the Korean systems, including our research center, are under restructuring. I am working at "Korea Institute of Science and Technology", a national laboratory. Even KIST has laid off 10% of its regular members. I am fine and I have two small research funds. I am working on both computational and experimental semiconductor physics.
From Jun Shen (MS, 1984), email: jshen@asu.edu I joined the Arizona State U. EE Dept. in Aug. 96, after 6+ years at Motorola. Before that, I got my PhD at the U. of Notre Dame. I like the academic environment better, even though it seems busier. My wife is also a Notre Dame graduate, and she is also an Assoc. Prof. here, working on Neural Networks.
From Y.T. Shen (PhD, 1986), email: ytshen@dds.nl I got your mail, thank you. Please keep my address on your e-mail list. I am also interested in "TTU Physics News". My address: Y.T. Shen, De Boelelaan 1005, 1082 SB Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
From Jeff Valder (BS, 1980), email: Ftsvalder@aol.com I was surprised to receive a copy of the TTU Physics News. I enjoyed reading about the department, my friends and some faculty that had to deal with me. I received my Engineering Physics BS in 1980 and took some courses under Drs. Hatfield and Myles. Congratulations to Dr. Hatfield on becoming Chair. He consistently tried to convince us that Physics is fun. My degree has helped me in past and current positions. I am the global marketing manager for the Fastener Tightening Systems of Ingersoll-Rand. I deal with engineers and scientists daily. I have to be able to communicate with them and turn their ideas into marketable products. Engineering Physics exposed me to different disciplines and allowed me to work with various engineers. This has allowed me to talk with them as something other than another salesperson. I am amazed at the broad background that degree gave me for future use in several different jobs. I would not change a thing. I have since received my Texas PE license and an MBA from Indiana U. To students I say stay with it, have a beer, and try to get Dr. Hatfield to give you that lecture on why bubbles form on the bottom of a beer pitcher, with a live demonstration at J. Patrick O'Malley's! That a lecture I will never forget! Addresses: Home: 3253 Regency Court, Bethlehem, PA 18020-1282, (610) 882-2440, Office: Ingersoll-Rand, 8 Bartles Corner Road, Ste. 101 Flemington, NJ 08822, (908) 782-6760 x13, (908) 782-0607 (Fax)
From: Dorothy Zoledziowska (MS, 1990), email: Zoledziowska.Dorothy@epamail.epa.gov I want to thank whomever passed my address along to the department. I live in a rural part of New Jersey. I think I qualify as a "non-traditional" physicist. For the past 7 years I have been an environmental scientist with the EPA. I'm looking forward to the alumni e-mail list. I would enjoy hearing from some of my old friends from TTU.
