Charley Myles: Boy Scouts of America (BSA)

Ever since our sons joined Cub Scouts in the middle 1980's, I've served in various capacities as a volunteer leader for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). I suppose this is natural for me, since I was very active in Scouting as a boy. I continue as an adult leader, even though our sons are grown, because I firmly believe in the ideals & principles of the BSA. These are summarized in the Scout Oath & the Scout Law. On the National BSA Web Page, these are expanded upon in the Building Blocks of Scouting & the Position Statements links. I also like to camp & to spend time in the outdoors! Being associated with a troop allows me the opportunity to do this in an organized manner & it also allows me to camp in many interesting places I likely would not go to otherwise.

I currently serve as a Member of the Committee of Troop 505. This troop is part of the Chaparral District of the South Plains Council of the BSA. In the past, I've served as the Troop 505 Dues & Membership Officer. (Resonsible for collecting dues & keeping membership records.) In 2003, I took the position of Eagle Advisor. I am responsible for guiding & advising boys (& their parents!) who are nearing the Eagle Scout rank. It is particularly rewarding to be able to guide boys towards Scouting's highest rank! I suppose that this position is natural for me, because I achieved the Eagle rank in 1964, when I was 16 years old, & both of our sons also achieved this rank.

In addition to being an adult leader of Troop 505, I am a member of the National Eagle Scout Association. I am also a member of the Nakona Lodge of The Order of the Arrow (OA). The OA is a national Scouting honorary & service society within the BSA. I have been a member of this organization since I was a boy.
